VORTEX-SE Observations

Current Observations by the UMass Frequency-Moduated Continuous Wave (FMCW) radar and a Vaisala CL31 ceilometer are shown below.  The FMCW radar operates at S-band and provides vertical profiles of reflectivity and vertical velocity with 5 m height resolution and approximately 1 s time resolution.  The ceilometer provides attenuated optical backscatter profiles at 16 s intervals.  Both instruments are deployed in Scottsboro, AL supporting VORTEX-Southeast sponsored by NOAA.  More about UMass' participation is available here.  During VORTEX-SE, the UMass FMCW radar operates under call sign WK9XUK.

OBSERVATIONS HAVE CONCLUDED FOR SPRING 2017

Prior FMCW radar observations are available here.  Prior ceilometer observations are available here.
