The overarching theme at MIRSL is microwave system engineering and its application to remote sensing of the environment. This encompasses the conception, design, development, and use of remote sensing instruments for studying geophysical processes. Science applications range from the atmosphere and oceans to severe weather and studies of the terrestrial biosphere.

The Advanced Multi-Frequency Radar (AMFR) which is a three-frequency radar capable of measuring the three dimensional structure of clouds and precipitation.
Mobile radars for severe weather research.
Boundary Layer research using th Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) radar.
Hurricane research using the Imaging Wind and Rain Airborne Profiler (IWRAP) and the UMass Simultaneous Frequency Radiometer (USFMR).
